[ ARCHIVE ] 1st International Workshop on Peer to Peer Networks (PPN´07)

Vilamoura, Algarve, Portugal, Nov 26, 2007

Proceedings will be published by Springer Verlag

Peer to Peer Networks, in which peer distributed computers around the Internet form a cooperative network to combine and share their resources, have recently gained a lot of attention in the social, commercial, and academic communities and attracted a lot of interest in research. They provide a great potential for building a cooperative networks that are self-organizing, efficient, and scalable to some extent.

Some of the benefits of a peer to peer approach include improving scalability by avoiding dependency on centralized points, eliminating the need for costly infrastructure by enabling direct communication among clients, and enabling resource aggregation.

While file-sharing has been very successful, peer-to-peer networks are important and useful for more than just (illegal) sharing of song and video files. One of the early driving forces behind the peer-to-peer concept is that there are many computers in homes and offices that lie idle for large chunks of time. Why then not leverage these idle resources to do something useful, like sharing computation or sharing content?.

The primary goal of this workshop is to serve as an active forum for researchers in the field of peer to peer networking, to meet and exchange background and current challenges in this area.
