Beyond SAWSDL 2009

[ARCHIVE] International Workshop on The Next Steps After SAWSDL

Co-sponsored by the SOA4All project

In conjunction with OnTheMove Federated Conferences (OTM'09)

WORKSHOP THEME

Semantic Web services (SWS) combine Web services with semantic technologies in order to better support the discovery, composition and execution of Web services. Top-down approaches to the development of semantic Web services, e.g. WSMO and OWL-S, provide highly expressive frameworks for describing Web services in a way that can support further automation for discovering or composing services. Despite the promising results obtained, a large-scale uptake of these solutions is still to be witnessed. Arguably, the main limitation of these approaches is their complexity both from a computational and from a knowledge-acquisition perspectives.

Conversely, other initiatives such as WSDL-S adopted a bottom-up approach based on less ambitious extensions that could eventually reach further adoption by the industry. In agreement with such the bottom-up approaches, the W3C produced SAWSDL, a lightweight bottom-up specification for adding semantic annotations to WSDL. Two years after SAWSDL became a W3C recommendation, we are seeing assorted use of this new specification in a variety of systems. Some researchers are focusing on generic extensions to SAWSDL that cater for additional functionalities, e.g. WSMO-Lite, whereas in many other cases the solutions adopted are mostly application specific. There is very little reuse of annotations between the various applications of SAWSDL. Indeed, SAWSDL by itself does not guarantee interoperability, it is rather the standard basis for exploration of semantic Web service descriptions. It is therefore becoming increasingly important to restart the convergence process around semantic Web services technologies based on the experience gained by applying SAWSDL in the last years.

WORKSHOP AIMS

In this workshop, we intend to bring together researchers and practitioners who are applying SAWSDL in order to discuss what semantic annotations are in use, what are the typical problems encountered, which are the solutions that have been adopted so far, and eventually identify what enhancements or extensions would be necessary in order to bring about interoperability beyond SAWSDL parsers.

We invite original academic and industrial papers that provide insights on the systematic use of SAWSDL within frameworks and applications, or that suggest possible extensions or enhancements over the language.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Integrated toolsets and methodologies for the systematic use of SAWSDL
  • Evaluation and lessons learnt applying SAWSDL
  • Semantic annotations for preconditions and effects, their evaluation
  • Semantic annotations for policies, QoS, or other non-functional properties
  • Languages and technologies for lifting and lowering
  • Task-specific extensions to SAWSDL (e.g., classification, selection, orchestration)

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Submitted papers will be reviewed by at least 3 members of the PC, and evaluated based on originality, significance, technical soundness, and clarity of expression. All submissions must be in English. Submissions should be in PDF format and must not exceed 10 pages. Detailed formatting instructions can be found at:

http://www.onthemove-conferences.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=67&Itemid=86

The final proceedings will be published by Springer Verlag as Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS). Failure to commit to presentation at the conference automatically excludes a paper from the proceedings.

Failure to comply with the formatting instructions for submitted papers will lead to the outright rejection of the paper without review.
