Proceedings published in a special OTM'09 volume of Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) by Springer Verlag.

WORKSHOP INTRODUCTION

The Ontologies in Distributed and Interactive Systems workshop (ODIS'09) will be the third in a series of international workshops dedicated to applications of ontologies to solve practical challenges in designing interactive and distributed systems. It is a unique forum for all of those interested in the convergence of knowledge representation and reasoning and Human Computer Interaction (HCI).

The workshop is a merger of two previous successful workshops: IEEE Ontologies in Interactive Systems at the British HCI conference (Liverpool, U.K, September 2008, https://www.cs.tcd.ie/ontoract08/) and the IEEE/ACM Workshop on Applied Ontologies in Distributed Systems (WAODS'08), International Conference on Soft Computing as Trans-disciplinary Science and Technology, CSTST'08, (Paris, France, October 2008, http://waods.Telecom-st-etienne.fr/).

The ODIS'09 workshop is an application-oriented, multi-disciplinary discussion forum for researchers and application developers from diverse disciplines of computer and social sciences who share an interest in using various forms of knowledge representation and reasoning to solve complex HCI challenges and managing user interaction in interactive and distributed systems.

The workshop will seek original contributions from the fields of: Knowledge representation and reasoning, Human-Computer Interaction, Multimodal Interaction, Distributed Systems, Adaptive Systems, Dialog Systems, Expert Systems, Semantic web, Information Retrieval and Multimedia Information Retrieval, Ubiquitous Computing, Smart Places, Pervasive environments, Ambient Intelligence, Assisted Living, Remote Care, Usability and Accessibility design, Software Engineering and Application Development, as well as usability and field studies.

In continuation with previous editions of the workshop, the ODIS'09 workshop will be particularly interested in discussing the following themes:

  • the use of knowledge based technologies for the digital inclusion of disfranchised (e.g. elderly and special needs) users in the digital society (see the U.K. Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Inclusion in the Digital Economy program at: http://www.computing.dundee.ac.uk/digitaleconomy/index.asp)
  • the use of semantic technology to increase the integration between the middleware/distributed systems layer and the interaction/user level.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to) one or more of the following themes:

  • Ontologies for user modeling, adaptation and personalisation
  • Ontologies in interactive and multimodal systems
  • Ontologies in middleware and distributed systems
  • Ontologies in expert and decision support systems
  • Ontologies for ambient intelligence, smart places and pervasive environments
  • Ontologies for accessibility, assistive technology and assisted living
  • Ontologies for e-health, tele-care and self-care
  • Ontologies in information retrieval and multimedia information retrieval systems
  • Ontologies in information management systems
  • Ontologies in recommender and expert systems
  • Ontologies in e-learning, tutoring and dialogue systems
  • Ontologies in web applications and web services
  • Various applications of ontologies (e.g. Intelligent Transport Systems, etc.)

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

The workshop proceedings will be published by Springer Verlag as a special Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) volume of the OTM'09 Workshop proceedings.

Author instructions can be found at:

http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html

Long paper: up to 10 pages.
Short paper: up to 6 pages.

Papers submitted to ODIS'09 must not have been accepted for publication elsewhere or be under review for another workshop or conference. All submitted papers will be carefully evaluated based on originality, significance, technical soundness, and clarity of expression by at least 3 expert reviewers from the international program committee. All submissions must be in English.

Submissions should be in PDF format.

Failure to comply with the above formatting instructions and page limits will lead to the outright rejection of the submission without review.
Each accepted submission requires at least one author of the paper to attend the workshop.

The paper submission site is located at : http://www.onthemove-conferences.org/index.php/submitpaper/odissub/
